Three books: The Best Travel Writing of 2000 (edited by Bill Bryson); Mom: A Celebration of Mothers from Storycorps (Dave Isay); and Close Range: Wyoming Stories (Annie Proulx). When I first encountered the title of Annie Proulx's short story “The Half-Skinned Steer” from her collection of stories Close Range, I assumed that it was some version of this story that I was going to read. If you're looking for quirky stories about middle-class families experiencing city life, then don't look between the covers of Close Range. Annie Proulx has a collection of Wyoming stories, Close Range: Wyoming Stories, which includes “Brokeback Mountain.”. Close Range: Wyoming Stories by Annie Proulx. But her story, while to some degree lacking the sort of slapstick . I love Wyoming and can't imagine a better setting for Glass Girl and Perfect Glass. Annie Proulx's Close Range: Wyoming Stories is one of my favorite collections of short stories. Proulx, who now lives in my home state of Wyoming, wrote several collections of short stories: Close Range: Wyoming Stories, Bad Dirt: Wyoming Stories 2, and Fine Just the Way It Is: Wyoming Stories 3. After the novel Accordion Crimes (1996), Proulx, who had moved to Wyoming in 1995, turned to the American West as the setting and motif for three volumes of stories, Close Range (1999), Bad Dirt (2004), and Fine Just the Way It Is (2008). David Romtvedt is a former Wyoming Poet Laureate and often writes about The Equality State.
